The next Federal Budget is fast approaching. Budgets are always about priorities: what is more important?
- People being able to keep a roof over their head, or billions of dollars of tax breaks for property investors?
- People being able to afford food and medicine, or billions of dollars of public subsidies for fossil fuel corporations?
- Huge, growing, defence spending, or lifting everyone out of poverty?
Anti-Poverty Network SA, along with other grassroots community groups across the country that represent the experts on poverty, the people living it, will be part of a National Week of Action on JobSeeker and the Federal Budget, from April 15-21.
JobSeeker, at only $54-a-day, is still way below the poverty-line ($88-a-day), and the tiny increases we have seen have been insulting, and quickly swallowed-up by increases to rents and other essentials.
We will be asking people on JobSeeker and other Centrelink payments, as well as supporters, to take action with us, so we can pressure the Albanese Government to raise Centrelink payments above the poverty-line, in the May Federal Budget.
We will be asking all of you to act with us, by:
- Sharing your story about living on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, or another payment
- Contacting your Federal MP, if you live in a Labor electorate (find out who your MP is here), and Social Services Minister, Amanda Rishworth (minister.rishworth@dss.gov.au)
- And, if you are feeling very keen, being part of a small delegation from Anti-Poverty Network SA and the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union, that visits your local MP, to chat to staff about why we need to lift payments out of poverty
- Visit to Steve Georganas’ office: Thursday April 18, 11am, Nailsworth
- Visit to Matt Burnell’s office: Friday April 19, 10am, Salisbury
- Action outside Amanda Rishworth’s office: Friday April 19, 1pm, Morphett Vale (Facebook event)
